Today, Helotes is known as a very family-oriented city, and was even named Bloomberg Business Week's 2013 Best Small Town in Texas to Raise Kids. NORTHSIDE INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT
Known as the "premiere school district of San Antonio," NISD serves over 106,000 students of northwest San Antonio. There are 116 different schools (including 5 magnet schools) within the district providing innovative, high-quality, diverse learning experiences for all students. NISD's high schools boast an average 94% graduation rate, with 99% of the district's graduating seniors applying to college. Clark, Brennan, and Brandeis High School have each received the silver award from U.S. News and World Report as nationally ranked high schools, and Health Career High School, with an outstanding graduation rate of 100%, was recognized with the gold medal.
Old Town Helotes - Old Town Helotes is the newly revitalized downtown of Helotes, and home to some amazing shopping, dining, and entertainment venues. Whether you're looking to shop for the latest fashion, or dine on some outstanding cuisine, Old Town Helotes has it! Old Town Market Days - Old Town Helotes hosts Old Town Market Days on the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Whether you're looking for great gift ideas or just picking something up for yourself, Market Day's has everything from handmade jewelry, fresh produce, arts and crafts and more! Six Flags Fiesta - Just 15 minutes from Helotes is one of the greatest attractions around, Six Flags Fiesta. Six Flags is San Antonio's biggest amusement park featuring dozens of thrill rides, shows and other activities that make for a fun day with the family. The parks nine roller coasters and water rides are sure to be a hit with thrill seekers.
John T. Floore Country Store - Don't let the name fool you, this isn't your average country store! First opened in the 1940's John T. Floore's Country Store is considered by locals today as "the ultimate Texas honky tonk." The popular music venue has hosted the likes of Willie Nelson. Clover Belles - For those that love the "thrill of the thrift" check out Clover Belles antique boutique where you can find just about anything vintage. From jewelry to sewing machines, there are countless treasures to be found at Clover Belles. Second Chances Thrift Shop - Another favorite of thrifters is Second Chance Thrift shop, where visitors can find an array of products from clothing and accessories, to collectibles. B Daddy's BBQ - Nothing screams Texas more than great BBQ, and B Daddy's BBQ is the place to go in Helotes. Open 6-days a week, B Daddy's offers a fun and inviting atmosphere serving real wood smoked brisket, ribs, sausage, pork and all the trimmings. Gables - Looking for a sweet treat? Than Gables Ice Cream Sliders is the place to go. Ice cream, cookie, and snow cones are all available at Gables, but their signature treat are the ice cream sandwiches that you can customize from eight varieties of freshly baked cookies and sixteen flavors of ice cream. Helotes Creek Winery - One of the many hidden treasures of Texas Hill Country is the countless breweries and wineries. Located in Old Town Helotes is the always-popular Helotes Creek Winery, known for its unique atmosphere and friendly service. Here visitors can enjoy a tasting of the Winery's 35 different types of wine that are all made in house by winery owner Lynn Sparacello. The winery also gives visitors the opportunity to create their own personalized wine, complete with a special customized label.
Oak Valley Driving Range and Par 3 - Located in Helotes, Oak Valley is a great place to work on your swing. Open to the public and year round, Oak Valley offers 9 holes of terrific views and challenging play for golfers at every skill level. New to golf? The facilities friendly staff members are more than willing to offer some tips and tricks for playing your best round. Cedar Creek Municipal Golf Course - This hidden gem is located north of Loop 1604, on the northwest side of San Antonio, TX. Cedar Creek is the perfect Hill Country golfing experience, with rolling hills and beautiful vistas that make play this 18-hole course a memorable and challenging experience. Cedar Creek offers four different tee boxes for all skill levels, ranging from 5500 yards to 7100 yards.
The city of Helotes has established four parks within the city including Helotes City Park and Playground, Helotes Creek Linear Park, Helotes Natural Area and Disc Golf Course and Iron Horse Canyon Natural Area. Each park offers residents and visitors a beautiful space to explore and relax, while enjoying the outdoors. Just a short drive from Helotes is Government Canyon State Natural Area located in San Antonio. The park has over 40 miles of hiking and biking trails perfect for adventurers of all skill types. Here visitors can hike, bike, picnic, trail run and more amongst beautiful scenery. The park also hosts regularly scheduled tours, and ranger programs for visitors to join in on and learn more about the areas plant and wildlife.
